CARS----Mater the Towmater Cake

My husband and I had never seen the entire Cars movie, so when I was asked to make a Mater cake for a friend's son's 2nd birthday, we sat down with our girls and watched the movie all the way through.  This is the first movie that they sat all the way through and watched.  For 18 months, we thought that was pretty good.  So after watching the movie and searching through some other cake pictures, I got inspired and this cake is what I came up with.  I am getting big into using Rice krispy treats, because it offers an alternative to cake at parties.  So, I made Mater our of RKT--had to make 3 batches because my husband ate the back half of Mater.-- ("that was the taste test"). The cake is half chocolate and half butter/vanilla sponge.  I covered with white buttercream and airbrushed some green over the entire cake for 2 reasons: 1. to give a variation of green to look more like ground and 2. to avoid having green teeth when it was eaten.  I used brown sugar--some of it was already in the stone look-- I didnt' smooth them, so they looked like rocks beside the road.  I had a lot of fun making this cake--it was a little tricky because this was my first vehicle--but pretty much everytime I make a cake especially shaped cakes- it's a first.  Always learning and loving what I do!!!!  Keep the requests and ideas coming!!

Love and Peace Cake

I was reading the cake wrecks blog and saw where so many people make the mistake of how they draw their peace signs-- they always forget the middle line goes all the way down..or they do it upside down.  Anyway for this cake, I made sure I got it right.  This is a birthday cake for a girl that is into peace/love.  I tie-dyed the fondant and covered cake that I had cut out into the letters and placed them on top of a butter/vanilla sponge cake with butter cream icing.  This brought out my hippie for a day. I even had my girls wearing bell-bottoms.
Peace and Love to all of you.

Cat in the Hat Baby Shower cake

This past weekend, I did a Cat in the Hat baby shower cake.  I formed the hat out of RKT and then covered  it in marshmallow fondant.  The cake is butter/vanilla with buttercream icing and fondant details of Who-ville trees with a clothesline between them with onesies, socks and bibs hanging from it.  I had a lot of fun making this cake, especially since it was Dr. Seuss's birthday today.-- What a coincidence.  I have been reading Dr. Seuss to my girls and they absolutely love the stories.  Hope you enjoy the pics.

Tinker bell cake

So, Tinker Bell is a big hit amongst young girls.  I put the DVD in for my girls, and of course, they don't like it.  It scared one of them and the other just went off to play with something else.  But, that doesn't mean that there aren't plenty out there that just adore her.
I just finished this tinker bell cake for a little girl's second birthday. The mother wanted strawberry cake- so I started with a vanilla butter cake base and added strawberry extract and then chopped up some fresh strawberries and added to the batter. Turned out scrumptious. Covered the cake in the MMF that I learned the recipe for in my wonderful class :-} I think for my first doll cake it turned out very cute.

Sweet 80's-- 80's themed Birthday cake for Mikle

I made this cake for Mikle who is turning 30 today.  It is a 12 in and 10in cream cheese pound cake with a small 6 inch used for the Simon says.  I haven't perfected my figures yet-so the smurf is just a head for now.

Not very active lately

So, I haven't been very active on here since I started my account.  Hopefully after the new year things will settle down and I will actually post pictures of my cakes on here.  I have so many that I want to share and I am looking forward to creating new things and posting them as well.  I hope everyone has a great Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Easy to Make Marshmallow Fondant Recipe

Tonight I attended the last class of my fondant class.  The only thing that I learned through this whole class is the recipe for Marshmallow fondant--which is pretty darn good.
The recipe is as follows:
16 oz marshmallows---for some reason brand name works best
2 tbsp water
2 lb. bag of powdered sugar
1 tbsp ea. Vanilla flavoring and Butter Flavoring  (clear for both)

In a microwavable bowl -- heat up the marshmallows and water for 30 secs.  stir and then do for another 15-30 secs until stirs smoothly
Then put in blender bowl.
Add flavoring at this time.
Fold in the powdered sugar 1/4 portion at a time.  When all of the sugar is in--it should strain the mixer a little- so take it out and finish working by hand-so you don't burn up your mixer.
Once it is all mixed and pliable-- work it into a ball and then prep it for storage by rubbing a small amount of shortening on the outside and then wrap it in plastic wrap-- then store it in an air-tight container.
If you want -- let it sit for about 20-30 mins and then you can use it the same day.

You can color this just like any fondant--best for covering a cake--
tip---Don't use this fondant for making figures or decorations--use professional fondant...
This is just for taste and covering a cake--does not hold shape as well as professional fondant or gumpaste.
